If you are looking for a delicious home cooked food, fine cask ales in a relaxed friendly environment then look no further.
An 18thCentury Inn The White Lion  is situated in Starkholmes directly above the Heights of Abraham's cable cars with spectacular views over the Derwent Valley, the perfect setting for a relaxed drink or meal.

Freshly prepared dishes are available lunchtimes and evenings using the finest local produce. Their newly refurbished restaurant  has an extensive menu catering for all tastes and budgets. Separate Vegetarian Menu, A la Carte Menu and Daily Specials Board. Special Diets also catered for.  My partner and I recently paid a visit to The White Lion Inn for an evening meal. We were warmly greeted by Vicky and Steve the owners of The White Lion. The atmos-phere was very friendly and welcoming with regulars, locals with their families and also visitors to the area. Vicky and Steve took over the pub some 14 months ago and have loved every minute of it so far.
We were shown to our table in the freshly decorated restaurant. There was a light airy cosy feel to the place. We were given the menus and shown the daily special boards. It was a difficult choice. My partner eventually ordered for starters a Salad of Black Pudding and Bacon , and I ordered BBQ Style Ribs cooked in a Tangy Sauce.

All the food is from local suppliers and is freshly prepared for each meal; their experienced Chef Graham, was trained with the Royal Navy. Our starters arrived after a short wait. The Black pudding and Bacon salad was tasty and enjoyed by my partner. My starter luckily came with a finger bowl. So that meant  I was in for a challenge not to get sauce down me. The ribs were hot and the sauce tangy, and with a little dexterity I managed to eat them without covering myself to much. They were worth the mess though, and as it was only the tablecloth that needed washing I did quite well.

My partner ordered The White Lion mixed grill from the main menu, and I or-dered Fillet of Sea Bass from the  a la carte menu. The Mixed grill was a challenge for the most hardened meat eaters.  All the meat was good quality and was cooked to his liking. His meal consisted of steak, gammon, pork chop, lamb cutlet, sausage, kidney, and liver. Two large home made onion rings and a separate plate of home made chips. All served with salad and an egg on top! Surprisingly he hardly left anything.

My more lady like Sea bass consisted of two fillets of sea bass with mixed pep-per tian and tomato and olive tapenade. The vegetables and new potatoes were served separately. The tomato and olive tapenade provided a brilliant accompaniment to the fish. The tian of mixed peppers were a selection of mixed peppers with the skins removed and cooked in a mould. Lovely presentation and also enhanced the flavour of the sea bass. The vegetable and potatoes were cooked well. I had a glass of Echo Falls White Zinfandel to accompany my meal.

We ordered desserts, I had meringue with cream and fruit. My partner had sticky toffee pudding and custard. Followed by two coffees.   We both recommend you try The White Lion Inn. The setting is beautiful, the pub and restaurant friendly. On a lovely summers evening it’s the perfect place to meet up with friends, have a meal and a drink and possibly finish off the evening playing a game a boules. What a perfect way to spend a summers evening.
