Restaurant Review
(Feb 06)

What makes Indian Cuisine so popular? It certainly seems to be loved by everyone around the world, and we in Matlock are lucky enough to have the taste of Indian right on our doorstep.
The Maazi (which means History) Restaurant is situated in the Ritz Building, with lovely views over Hall Leys Park Matlock.

We were warmly greeted by Irfan Shabir the owner of Maazi’s Restaurant. The restaurant has a cosy lounge area and licensed bar, which was busy with people having a drink and ordering their meals, so we were shown to our table so we could relax and order our food in peace.

The Maazi menu is impressive and according to Irfan took three months to perfect, with his head chef Salam Khan, who has over twenty years experience serving the best Indian food.
It was difficult to choose from the mouth watering menu, which takes it’s influences from North India, Mumbai and Lahore. We had a cold Cobra beer to help us make up our minds.
We ordered  a starter and a main course, my partner ordered Resmi Khazana a shaped minced Lamb sausage combined with spices and coriander, cooked in a Tandoori oven, then it was combined with an egg omelette, served with a small salad, the verdict was very meaty, spicy and delicious.
I had Prawn and Spinach Pancake, which was a lightly folded pancake filled with prawns and leaf spinach, combined with spices. The spinach takes up the flavour of the spices really well, and compliments the prawns.

Our main courses arrived, my partner was more adventurous than usual and ordered the Chef’s own invention
the Maazi Kusbuh, an aromatic meal combining Lamb, Chicken and prawns in a sauce with onions peppers, tomatoes and fresh coriander.
My partner is a difficult man to please
when it comes to curries, but he seemed delighted and is now a Maazi convert , and we both agreed we  wouldn’t hesitate to come back again.

I have always believed that the test of a good Indian Restaurant lies in how they cook their lamb, so I ordered a Naram Garam Gosht with  pieces of Lamb cooked with Punjabi spices, herbs, mushrooms and tomatoes. The meal had tender pieces of lamb in a rich spicy sauce, and was really delicious.

To compliment our meal we had Lemon and Cashew nut rice and a Mushroom rice with a side dish of Sag aloo (potatoes and Spinach)
The spinach was fresh tasting and full of spicy flavours.
What makes Indian Cuisine so popular? It certainly seems to be loved by everyone around the world, and we in Matlock are lucky enough to have the taste of Indian right on our doorstep.
